Why cold comes before hot on almost every one of our quotes

Because the island never really cools down and the tap already runs close to 30 degrees. There is no month here when a cold shower is actually cold, so contrast has to be built rather than found. A gym-goer finishing up in Batam Centre at eight in the evening, someone back from a run along Coastarina, a guest stepping off the Friday ferry into Nongsa - the cold is what they ask for first, the hot room comes second.

That flips the usual order these projects follow in a cooler market, and it shapes what actually gets built first. A good number of our jobs start as the plunge on its own, with a cabin following in a second phase once the household has the routine down.

Deciding between a half-horsepower chiller and a full one

The answer comes down to volume, how hard it gets used, and where it physically sits. A half HP chiller is plenty for a single-person tub of 250-350 litres in ordinary household use, bringing it down overnight and holding it there without strain. A full 1 HP earns its place once you're past 400 litres, running back-to-back users, or standing a tub outdoors where the sun works against it all day.

Either size holds anywhere from 3 to 15 degrees, though most people land on 8-12 once they've tried it. Buying just the chiller for a tub you already own runs an indicative IDR 25-55 million. Put it in shade on a raised plinth with air free to move around it, and it noticeably outperforms the same unit shut inside a cupboard.

Keeping the water clean when the air outside never dries out

The tub itself is larch or thermowood built over an insulated frame with a food-grade liner, and that insulation is doing more work than people expect - it's the reason the chiller isn't running flat out around the clock. A properly fitted lid matters as much as the chiller's size for holding temperature, and both together are what keep the power bill sane.

A filter pump running ozone or UV is what keeps the water honest, stretching a household tub to weeks between full changes rather than days. There's a proper drain, the surround is sloped away from the tub rather than toward it, and on an outdoor Nongsa deck the timber gets the same stainless hardware and roof cover as an outdoor cabin.

What the grid, the drain and the calendar actually need

A plunge chiller barely troubles the grid. Drawing roughly 0.5-1 kW, a half to one HP unit sits happily on a 2,200 VA connection or better, so there's no PLN Batam upgrade attached to the plunge on its own. It still gets a dedicated circuit and an ELCB, because sharing a socket with the garden lighting is how a pump and chiller end up tripping the breaker for no good reason. Running cost lands around an indicative IDR 300,000-700,000 a month holding temperature non-stop.

Installation runs one to two weeks whether the address is Nongsa, Batam Centre, Sekupang or out along Barelang, and most of that time goes into plumbing and getting the levels right rather than carpentry.
